Nobody Learns Without Getting Hit

I owned a martial arts school, and if that place taught me one thing, it’s that you can’t learn to fight without getting punched in the face.

You can watch videos, shadowbox in the mirror and memorize every technique on the wall. None of it means much until someone across from you starts throwing back. The first real hit tests everything you thought you knew. Some people quit right there. The ones who stay are the ones who learn, because every hit shows you something: where your guard dropped, where you got lazy, where you were too sure of yourself.

But nobody in a good school spars full contact on day one. You put on gloves and headgear. You work with a partner who controls the pace. You still get hit, just in doses you can survive and learn from. Then you go home, think about what happened and come back the next class a little sharper.

Trading works the same way.

Everyone who trades gets hit. You’ll have trades where you were sure and lost anyway. You’ll make mistakes you knew better than to make. I have, more than once. That isn’t proof you’re failing. It’s part of learning.

What matters is how you take the hits. Your position size is your headgear: small enough that a bad trade stings without knocking you out of the game.

Your stop is your guard, decided before you step in, not after you’re already reeling. And your journal is the ride home, where you sit with what happened and figure out what it was trying to teach you.

That’s why it bothers me so much when I see what’s being sold online. Turn $10 into a million dollars. Buy my course, follow my indicator, and you’ll never take a loss. The message underneath is always the same: you can skip the hits.

You can’t, and believing you can is dangerous. People who were promised they wouldn’t get hit don’t know what to do when they do. They decide something’s wrong with them or with the strategy, so they quit or go chasing the next shortcut. Some size up to win it back fast, which is like pulling off your headgear right after getting rocked.

Nobody on my mat ever earned a belt by buying it. They earned it by showing up, taking the hits and getting a little better each time. Slowly.

I’ve taken my share of hits in the market. Some were expensive. Some were embarrassing. Every one taught me something I couldn’t have learned any other way.

So if you’re getting hit right now, I’m not going to tell you it stops. Make sure each hit is small enough to survive, figure out what it showed you, and come back tomorrow.

Keep your guard up, on the mat and in the market.

Just like a good cigar, stay patient, let it burn.
